Summer 2010

Earlston’s ‘Bayeux Tapestry’

During the last school term, each student from two first-year classes designed and produced their own square of tapestry on the theme of Earlston and other parts of the Borders. All the squares were put together to produce a giant two-metre work of art.

Some images from the textile have been made into a calendar which the school hopes will sell to raise funds for the ‘Friends of Mangu’ charity. It is aiming to rebuild the Mangu Junior Secondary School which collapsed soon after it was built in 1992.

Carol Burnside, Art and Design Teacher at Earlston High School, has a keen interest in textile design and led the project. She said: “This is really Earlston’s answer to the Bayeux Tapestry, and we are keen for people to buy a calendar to support the project and this very good cause.”
