Summer 2010

From schools to kitchens, our architects do it all

As well as getting involved in the design of new buildings, including the impressive new Denholm Primary School, they have been working on a large number of smaller projects that have benefited many Borders communities.

One recent project was planning and managing the installation of new kitchens at the award-winning Harestanes Countryside Visitor Centre at Ancrum near Jedburgh. The new layout creates a far more welcoming space for visitors who can now enjoy a wider range of healthy snacks and refreshments.

The team has also been busy working on school kitchens as part of the Council’s strategy to produce more food onsite, providing fresher food for local children and saving money in the long-term. One such school is Melrose Primary, where food was previously brought in from Langlee.

Most of the work on schools has to be done during holiday periods and this provides challenging timescales for the team to work to.

Another major aspect of the team’s work is ensuring that Council facilities meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act. This has involved installing new ‘hygiene rooms’, including accessible toilets, showers and changing facilities at Parkside, Chirnside and Ancrum primary schools. A new lift has been installed at Selkirk High School and a visual fire alarm at Jedburgh Grammar for the hard of hearing.
