Summer 2010

New approach to social work

New project: Dorothy Lamb, left, and Julie Wilson

Personalisation is a new and more flexible approach to providing support to people who qualify for a service.

It means that individuals will have full choice and control over how a personal budget can be used to improve their day to day living. It promotes a more creative approach where people find their own solutions, often within their own neighbourhood or community.

The main point is that they can choose how to use their budget in the way that is best for them.

The Self Directed Support project has two strands; part of the funding is being used to develop a short breaks service, previously known as respite, to allow service users more choice and control in planning and taking a break from their ordinary circumstances – and the other part is being used to fund a trial of 20 people using the new personal budget approach.

Julie Wilson, former Assistant Team Leader in Kelso, has been appointed to manage the project. Dorothy Lamb also joins existing Short Breaks Co- ordinator Fiona Marynicz, to help provide information and support the development of individualised breaks.

The project will be evaluated after a year and will help to shape the future of mainstream services.
