Many benefits at out-of-school clubs in the area
Most clubs are for school-age children in the afternoons but some offer facilities for pre-school children and breakfast clubs before school. All provide full or part time care and are registered with the Care Commission.
Clubs are usually based in or near schools and managed by a voluntary committee or a private organisation. Many registered childminders also provide out of school care.
All out-of-school clubs in the Borders are members of a local network, giving them access to shared information, the chance to attend group play days and access to the toy library.
At the end of the summer holidays last year, the committee of Scottish Borders Out of School Care Network (SBOOSCN) discussed the possibility of increasing their annual holiday play-days to include a ‘Big Day Out’ for all the out of school care providers in the region.
The network was awarded a £5100 grant to run a day featuring workshops and transport for the 160 children and staff to and from the venue.
The event took place at Springwood Park, Kelso. The workshops for the children were, ‘Infectious Grooves’, an African drumming workshop, sports and arts and crafts with ‘Future Stars’ and den building and problem solving with ‘Mindstretchers’.
The children staged a presentation of the drumming and dance they had learned, wearing the masks they had made in the arts/ crafts workshop.
